A long interesting day

Today was a really long day for me. I felt there were a lot of opportunities for referrals today. People with maturing GIC’s and people who qualify for a multi-product rebate. Most people just can’t or don’t want to book an appointment on the spot, they just can’t commit. Sigh. It’s tough. Even though I make the effort to let them know about it, most of them just want to call in and book an appointment or show up on the day of. If only they knew how to help out tellers reach their goals! The thing is we as tellers don’t get the credit even though we had the goodwill in letting customers know information that can help them save money. We only get credit for booking a quality referral meaning our clients sit down with an account manager and open a product. This makes it much more of a challenge.

Story 1- What’s cool was today I saw a lady whom had a huge balance on her visa card and I asked her if she pays her credit card on time regularly. She said she had some difficulty. I suggested a credit line for her the benefits being able to pay off your credit card quick with it and also having to pay less interest than not paying of your credit card. She was Iranian and had never heard of such a thing! She thanked me about the useful information and came back to me a couple of minutes wanting to book an appointment! Whoo! My strategy is to look for clues such as large balance in visa and see if a credit line could help a customer.

Story 2- I think there were 3 customers who came in and I noticed they were paying mortgages from other banks. I asked them about what rates they were getting and whether they were happy about their rates. Some said they were happy and some said they weren’t. I encouraged them to reevaluate their rates as rates do fluctuate and RBC could definitely provide them a competitive and maybe an even better rate.

Story 3- I put my mandarin to good use today. Not so great with bank terms yet but building my knowledge. Mr. He is from China and he really needed someone who could speak mandarin to help him out. His English was very limited and he wanted to transfer some ridiculous huge amount of money to China. His bank information in China was a mixture of Chinese and English words which helped. In my head I’m thinking oh boy this is going to be challenging. The whole process probably took about an hour just to get straight all the information right and wired out correctly. He thanked me for helping me out. A couple hours he came back again with another problem, his Visa wasn’t working! I called Visa and found out he didn’t make a payment of $4000+ in the month so they put his account in delinquency until it was paid. His balance was $7000 and he was confused. So I printed out statements and that’s when he realized that it was his wife using his card racking up the balance! He had trouble reading the bank statements in English asking me if there’s a Chinese version one.

Something is wrong with me. I ate so much today. I ate my home lunch at 12, then my hour lunch at 3 I ate a whole box of Chinese food at Osaka. At night I ate a burger at Cactus. When I went home I ate some leftover food again. I ain’t gaining any weight either. Where is that extra food going?

Ended the day with my colleagues at Cactus Club celebrating and bidding farewell to one of our great co-workers Rory who is moving on to another branch in downtown Vancouver. Very nice guy who helped me a lot whenever I had questions. Patient and willing to teach and a team player. Wish him the best.
